AI search optimization for Orange County businesses

An honest guide to whether your customers really find you through ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, how to check for yourself in twenty minutes, and what is worth doing about it.

By Jennifer Asher Cardenas, founder of Brightwork ✦ Se habla español

I get a version of this question almost every week, usually from a founder in Irvine or Costa Mesa who just got a cold email promising "guaranteed placement in ChatGPT." Is this real, and am I behind? This is the guide I wish existed when those emails started landing: AI search optimization for Orange County businesses, explained the way I would on a call.

Two things are true at once. AI assistants really are where people ask for local recommendations now, and no lever exists that guarantees your name comes out the other side. What you can do is make yourself easy to find, easy to describe, and hard to get wrong. That is most of the job, and it looks suspiciously like good SEO.

The short version

According to BrightLocal's 2026 consumer research, 45% of US consumers used an AI tool for a local business recommendation in the past year, up from 6% the year before. So yes, it matters. But it is barely a separate discipline: Google's own documentation says no special optimizations and no special schema are needed to appear in AI Overviews. The honest playbook for AI search optimization in Orange County is entity consistency, a clean Google Business Profile, real reviews, plain-language pages, and getting genuinely mentioned on the pages AI systems already read.

Do Orange County customers actually find businesses through AI?

Some do, and the growth is fast. The best data I have found is BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, published March 2026 and based on 1,002 US adults. It found 45% had used an AI tool for a local business recommendation in the past year, against 6% the previous year, and 63% of those users said they trust the recommendations.

The more useful finding is the next one: 97% of AI users said they at least sometimes double-check an AI recommendation against real reviews. AI is a shortlist machine, not a decision machine. It narrows the field, then your reviews, your website and your Google Business Profile still have to close the deal. For an Orange County service business that is good news.

The other half of the picture is traffic. The Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 real Google searches from 900 US adults and found that when an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, versus 15% with no summary, and clicked a link inside the summary on just 1%. Fewer clicks, and the answer above them is now doing the recommending.

How AI assistants actually pick a local business

Nobody outside these companies knows the full recipe, and anyone who says otherwise is guessing with confidence. But the mechanics are documented well enough to explain why your competitor gets named and you do not.

When you ask an assistant for the best plumber in Laguna Niguel, it does not usually run your sentence as one search. Ahrefs studied 15,000 long-tail queries across ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity and found only about 12% of AI-cited URLs rank in Google's top 10 for the original prompt. The cause is query fan-out: the assistant rewrites your question into several related searches and merges the results. The pages it cites are the ones answering the sub-questions, not the ones winning the headline keyword.

So which pages win those sub-questions? A Peec AI study of 30 million citations, reported by Search Engine Land, found Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn were the most-cited domains, with Yelp and G2 dominating recommendation queries. ChatGPT leaned on Wikipedia, Reddit and editorial sites; Google's AI surfaces leaned toward Facebook and Yelp. These systems trust places where other people talk about you more than your own homepage.

Which leads to four things that make a business easy to name.

Entity clarity

Be one thing, everywhere

One name, one category, one service area, spelled identically on your site, your Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple and every directory. Contradictions make you fuzzy, and fuzzy businesses get skipped.

Third-party corroboration

Be talked about elsewhere

Roundups, directories, chamber listings, local press, podcasts, Reddit threads. If the only page saying you are good is your own, you are a weak candidate.

Reviews with substance

Specific beats numerous

Recent reviews that name the service and the city give a model something quotable. A wall of star ratings with no words is worth less than twenty reviews describing the work.

Plain, literal pages

Say what you do, for whom, where

Service pages, location pages and FAQs in the words customers use, with structured data matching the visible text. Clever headlines read well to humans and badly to machines.

This is why genuine local roundups matter. A page like my guide to the best boutique marketing agencies in Orange County is exactly the shape these systems cite: a named list, with reasons, on a real site, about a specific place. Being honestly included in one is worth more than a hundred directory submissions.

Run your own AI search audit in about twenty minutes

I am not going to tell you what an audit of your business would find, because I have not run one, and neither has anyone who emails you a "report" with your logo on it. What I can do is hand you the process so you can judge your own results.

Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google (AI Mode and a normal search) in a logged-out or incognito window. Type these prompts, substituting your service and city, and run each three times in a new chat.

A DIY AI visibility check. Substitute your own service, city and business name. Results will differ from yours yesterday and from your neighbor's; that is expected, and explained below.
Prompt to typeWhat you are looking for
best [your service] in [your city], CAAre you named at all? Who is? How many names before it stops?
who should I hire for [your service] near [your city]Hiring intent. Often returns a different set than the "best" prompt.
I run a [type of business] in [your city]. Who do you recommend for [service]?The way a real customer asks. The prompt I would trust most.
what does [your business name] do?Right services, right city, right spelling?
is [your business name] any good? what do reviews say?Which review platforms it reaches for, and whether it quotes anything.
compare [your business name] and [a competitor]How you are positioned, and what it thinks you cost.
top rated [your service] in Orange CountyCounty-level phrasing. Usually favors listicles and directories.

What to record while you do it

  1. Named or not named. Three times per prompt, per platform. One miss means nothing; missing every time is a signal.
  2. Accuracy of the description. Wrong services, wrong city, old name, invented hours. All fixable, and usually traceable to a stale listing.
  3. The citation trail. Click the sources. Those pages are doing the work in your category. Write them down.
  4. Who else gets named, and why. If three competitors all appear on the same directory or roundup, you have found your to-do list.
  5. Anything flatly wrong. Hallucinated pricing, a closed location, a dropped service. Fix the source of truth; you cannot edit the answer.

Why your results will vary, and why that is fine

Before you draw conclusions, or before anyone shows you a screenshot as proof, understand that these systems are not deterministic. The same prompt can return different businesses an hour apart. Here is what moves any given run.

  • Generation is probabilistic. Ask twice, get two answers. That is by design, and it is why a single screenshot proves nothing about anyone's "AI ranking."
  • Personalization and memory. If you are logged in, past chats shape what you see. Your results and your customer's will differ.
  • Location inference. It guesses where you are from your IP or the city you name. Testing on office wifi in Aliso Viejo will not match a customer in Santa Ana.
  • Whether it browsed. An answer from training data behaves very differently from one that ran live searches. Watch for the "searching the web" indicator.
  • Model and index updates. Platforms ship changes constantly. A result from last quarter is history, not a baseline.

The takeaway: track patterns across several runs and platforms, never a single result, and do not let anyone bill you against a metric that changes when you refresh the page.

The AI search optimization work that actually moves the needle

Now the useful part. This is the list, roughly in order of return on effort. None of it is exotic, and all of it helps ordinary search too.

Do these first

  • Google Business Profile hygiene. Correct primary category, real service areas, current hours, photos, services.
  • Consistent NAP. Identical name and city everywhere: Google, Yelp, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, chamber listings.
  • Ask for reviews, always. A steady trickle of specific, recent reviews beats a burst once a year.
  • Answer real questions on your site. Pricing, process, service area, with FAQ schema matching the visible words.

Then these

  • Earn genuine mentions. Local roundups, association pages, sponsorships, a quote in a local outlet, a podcast.
  • Publish the comparison content yourself. Cost, process and "versus" pages get pulled into AI answers constantly.
  • Show up where your category is discussed. Reddit and forums are heavily cited. Participate honestly; do not astroturf.
  • Keep one source of truth. When a service or price changes, change it everywhere that week.

On that second column: writing your own honest cost content is unglamorous and it works. My guide to what marketing costs in Orange County and the breakdown of in-house marketing versus an agency exist because those are the questions people actually ask, in those words. They are also the sub-questions a query fan-out goes looking for.

What I would refuse to pay for

This category has attracted a lot of noise. Search it and you get page after page of near-identical "best GEO agency" articles with no named author and no evidence anyone did the work. Here is what I would push back on.

  • "Guaranteed placement in ChatGPT." No ad slot, no submission form, no ranking dial. Anyone promising a spot is misunderstanding the technology or counting on you to.
  • "We'll get you into the training data." Training corpora are assembled by the model developers on their own schedule. No vendor controls that.
  • Programmatic "AEO" or "GEO agency" packages. If the vendor's own site is a hundred spun city pages, they are optimizing for volume, not for you. Look for a named human.
  • Hidden text and prompt injection tricks. Invisible instructions aimed at crawlers age badly and can get you penalized in the search you depend on.
  • Bulk AI-written location pages. Thirty thin pages for thirty OC cities will not make you the answer. It makes you the thing filtered out.
  • A visibility dashboard as the whole plan. Tracking mentions is useful, but tracking is not a strategy, and a big monthly fee to watch a number wobble is not a plan.

How AI search optimization connects to normal SEO

Mostly, it is the same work. That is not me being contrarian; it is what Google says. The AI features documentation on Google Search Central states plainly that "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary," and that "there's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add." The bar is pages that are indexed and eligible for snippets, helpful people-first content, and structured data matching what a visitor sees.

Two caveats. First, that is Google describing Google; ChatGPT and Perplexity have their own retrieval and source preferences, which is why the citation studies show such different domain mixes. Second, "the same work" does not mean "no work." The leverage sits in boring places: listings, reviews, entity consistency, plain-language pages. AI search is not a channel you buy into. It is a surface that reflects your reputation back at people.

What should an Orange County business do this quarter?

Sequenced for a small OC business with limited time: week one, run the self-audit above and write down what you find, citation trails included. Week two, fix your Google Business Profile and every listing until your name, city and services read identically. Week three, build a real review habit. Week four onward, write the three pages that answer your most-asked questions in customer language, then earn two or three genuine third-party mentions in the county. Re-run the audit at ninety days and look for movement, not a switch flipping.

If you would rather do this with someone, that is what I do. I am Jennifer, I run Brightwork out of Aliso Viejo, I have an MBA and 12+ years growing brands, and I have worked with 50+ brands here and nationwide. Boutique by design means you work directly with me, and I will tell you honestly when something is not worth your money. Frequently asked questions

Can you guarantee my business shows up in ChatGPT?

No, and nobody honestly can. There is no ad slot, no submission form and no ranking dial inside ChatGPT, and the answers are probabilistic, so the same question can return different businesses an hour apart. What I can do is make you easier to find and describe: consistent listings, a clean Google Business Profile, real reviews, plain pages that answer real questions, and genuine mentions on the sites these systems already read. Anyone selling a guarantee is selling something they do not control.

Is AI search replacing Google in Orange County?

Not replacing, but it is changing the shape of it. BrightLocal's 2026 research found 45% of US consumers used an AI tool for a local business recommendation in the past year, up from 6% a year earlier, and Pew Research Center found that when a Google AI summary appears, people click a traditional result on 8% of visits versus 15% without one. Expect fewer clicks on informational searches. What has not changed is that 97% of AI users double-check recommendations against real reviews.

What do AEO and GEO actually mean?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization and GEO for generative engine optimization. Both are new labels for one goal: being the business an AI assistant names or cites. They are useful shorthand and also heavily used by vendors selling packages, so treat the acronym as a topic, not a credential. The work behind both is entity consistency, listings hygiene, reviews, clear content and third-party mentions, which is why I mostly call it good local SEO with a wider set of destinations.

Do I need a separate AI SEO agency?

Almost certainly not. Google's own guidance says there are no additional requirements and no special structured data needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and the work that helps everywhere else is the work that helps here. A second vendor usually means paying twice for overlapping tasks and splitting ownership of your listings, which is how inconsistencies creep in. If someone is already doing solid local SEO for you, ask them to add AI answer checks to your reporting.

What does AI search optimization cost in Orange County?

It should not be a separate line item, and I would be wary of any quote that treats it as one. In practice it lives inside a local SEO or website engagement: listings cleanup, review systems, content that answers real questions, and reporting that now includes AI answer checks. Orange County pricing for that ongoing work varies widely by scope, which I break down in my guide to what marketing costs in Orange County. The cheapest useful version is free: run the self-audit above.

How long before I see results?

Plan on a quarter before you can fairly judge anything, and expect noisier signals than ordinary rankings. Listing corrections propagate in days or weeks, reviews accumulate at whatever pace you ask for them, and new pages need to be crawled, indexed and then picked up by retrieval systems. Because answers vary run to run, re-run the same prompts at 30, 60 and 90 days and look at how often you appear across many runs, not at any single result.

Does my Google Business Profile matter for ChatGPT?

Yes, indirectly and significantly. Your profile feeds Google's own AI surfaces directly, and it shapes the wider web of listings, maps data and review platforms that other assistants draw on. A study of 30 million AI citations reported by Search Engine Land found Yelp and similar platforms dominating recommendation queries, with Google's AI surfaces leaning toward Facebook and Yelp. A wrong category or an outdated service area propagates far past Google.

Can Brightwork help with this?

Yes. This sits inside my website and SEO work, and it starts with a free discovery call where we look at your actual situation rather than a template.
